September 21: In Discussion with Mr. Szeto Wah

  • Time: September 21, 2006, Thursday, 7:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
  • Location: 242 Dwinelle Hall
The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs will be hosting this year's first seminar with special guest Mr. Szeto Wah, former member of the Hong Kong Lesgislative Council. Mr. Szeto has played an important part in development of Hong Kong. He has also been deeply involved in fighting for human rights in Mainland China. He will be discussing the future of Hong Kong's Democratic System.

October 6: Moon Festival Celebration

The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Afffairs will host the annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Celebration with moon cakes, riddles, games and prizes. Take a break from all your studying, come join us for a free tasting of moon cakes with our members and officers. Come join us and have some fun!

October 12: Game Night

  • Location: 242 Dwinelle Hall
The Cantonese Students Association and the Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs will host a joint game night on Thursday night, October 12th. We will be playing interactive group games in addition to various board games, cards and Mah Jong. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided during the event. The event is free, so bring your friends and come join our event.

October 18: Movie Night

The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs will be hosting a free movie night for everyone on Wednesday evening, October 18. We will be showing Kung Fu Bet of Basic 打雀英雄傳, 94 minutes long in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.

October 28: SHKCA Saturday Tea Luncheon

  • Location: Oakland Chinatown
The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs will be holding a dim sum luncheon event with all members and officers in Oakland's Chinatown. This will be a great opportunity for the members and officers of the organization to interact and chat casually with each other. It will also be a great opportunity to learn more about Cantonese cuisine and the local Oakland Chinese community.

November 1: In Discussion with Dr. Robert Spear

  • Event: "Traveling through 3 Centuries in 100 Meters: Observations on Occupational and
    Environmental Health in Modern China."

The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs will be hosting our second academic night with Dr. Robert Spear this coming Wednesday. Dr. Spear from UC Berkeley’s School Public Health will speak with SHKCA about “Traveling through 3 Centuries in 100 Meters: Observations on Occupational and Environmental Health in Modern China.” His research interests focus on the assessment and quantification of human exposures to toxic and hazardous agents in the environment, principally the occupational environment. His current work in this area is in collaboration with colleagues both at Berkeley and at the Sichuan Institute of Parasitic Disease focused on determinants of the incidence and control of schistosomiasis in the mountainous regions of Sichuan Province in southwestern China.

November 15: In Discussion with Dr. Stanley Lubman

  • Event: "Chinese Law Reform: Progress and Obstacles"
  • Time: November 15, 2006, Wednesday, 07:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

    Dr. Stanley Lubman from the Boalt School of Law will come speak with SHKCA about "Chinese Law Reform: Progress and Obstacles." This is an open event and eveyone is welcome to come. Stanley Lubman has specialized on China as a scholar and as a practicing lawyer for more than 30 years. Lubman has been advising clients on the People's Republic of China since 1972 on a wide range of matters, and he has also been active in representing clients in disputes arbitrated by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission in Beijing.

December 7: SHKCA End of Semester Celebration

  • Time: December 7, 2006, Thursday, 07:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
  • Location: 242 Dwinelle Hall

    The Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs is inviting everyone, especially our members, to join the SHKCA End of Semester Celebration. We will have FREE food and drinks, fun and games, and raffle prizes.

    In addition, we will have a Super Poker/Deuces/Big Two FUNDRAISING tournament. To become a participant: $5 for members, $6 for non-members. There will be monetary prizes for the top three winners and a constellation prize for the fourth. All funds raised from the tournament will help out future SHKCA events. Become a contestant to support SHKCA!
