On June 3rd and 4th 1989, the Chinese government ordered a military crackdown on student protestors in Tiananmen Square, ending months of peaceful student demonstration. This incident aroused the attention of a group of UC Berkeley students, who founded the Society of Hong Kong and Chinese Affairs (SHKCA) in commemoration of what has become known as the "6-4" event or the Tiananmen Square Incident. Today, SHKCA has shifted away from its original political roots and evolved into a neutral forum for the discussion of cultural, economic, social and political issues of concern to Chinese communities in East Asia. We also continue to keep a close watch on China's growing influence on world affairs. Come to our events and learn what's happening in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
